November is Diabetes Awareness Month and every November, Diabetes Canada takes this opportunity to promote and raise awareness surrounding Diabetes.

The organization and cause it’s fighting for hit close to home here at Debian IT, as our key team member – Cheyenne, is our resident type 1 diabetic.  As Executive Assistant to our CEO, Cheyenne has never let diabetes slow her down!  She wears a glucose monitor and an insulin pump, but she was quick to point out that “no one at the company has ever made it feel like a hindrance”, and that “everyone is always very supportive”.
That’s why this month we wanted to focus on bringing attention to this growing epidemic.  Here are some quick facts about type 1 diabetes (T1D):
T1D isn’t caused by eating sugary food (or junk food, either). We don’t fully know what causes T1D and why some people get it, and others don’t. But we do know it’s not something you can prevent – and it has definitely nothing to do with eating sweets or sugary food.
There is no cure for T1D. Once someone is diagnosed, they have it for life. But it can be successfully managed by taking insulin, eating a healthy balanced diet, and keeping fit and active.
T1D is not contagious. T1D does not spread from person to person, but families with a history of autoimmune diseases may have more than one family member with T1D.
Here at Debian IT, we love to help and support important causes such as this.  For more on what you can do to help, please visit the Diabetes Canada website at https://www.diabetes.ca/how-you-can-help
